India AI Impact Summit 2026: Google CEO Sundar Pichai says AI is the biggest 'platform shift of our lifetime', calls for collective action

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai underscored the monumental shift artificial intelligence (AI) represents in our era. He called for a collaborative global effort to harness AI's potential for the betterment of society. "This is the most significant platform shift of our lifetimes. We stand on the brink of unprecedented advancements that could enable developing nations to overcome traditional challenges," Pichai remarked. In his address to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and an audience of international leaders, Pichai shared insights on Google's extensive infrastructure developments in India, reflecting on his own experiences as a student in the country. However, the key message of his keynote was a rallying cry for unity among governments and technology firms, with trust being essential. He stated, "Regardless of our ambitions and responsible actions, we cannot fully unlock AI's advantages without collaboration. Governments play a crucial role in establishing regulations, managing risks, and innovating public services that enhance everyday life while hastening the adoption of these technologies by businesses and individuals." Pichai urged leaders to transition from mere discussions to actionable steps, emphasizing the unprecedented opportunity to improve lives on a grand scale. He expressed confidence in the capabilities and resolve of the leaders present, saying, "We must unite our efforts to make this vision a reality." Addressing the potential for an 'AI divide', Pichai highlighted the importance of the "America-India Connect" initiative, which aims to ensure equitable access to AI technologies. "While technology has the power to change lives, we must guarantee that everyone can benefit from these advancements. We cannot permit the digital divide to evolve into an AI divide. This entails investing in computing infrastructure and connectivity," he explained. Finally, Pichai tackled the issue of job displacement due to AI advancements, acknowledging the emergence of new industries and professional roles over the past two decades. He noted, "AI will certainly transform the workforce, automating certain tasks while evolving others, and giving rise to entirely new professions. For instance, the idea of a professional YouTube creator was non-existent twenty years ago, yet today, millions thrive in this space."
