Nearly a third of American teens interact with AI chatbots daily, study finds

A recent study has unveiled that nearly one-third of American teenagers report using AI chatbots on a daily basis. This revelation sheds light on the growing integration of technology in the lives of young people, raising important discussions about the potential risks associated with such interactions, particularly concerning mental health and exposure to inappropriate content. Conducted by the Pew Research Center, this report marks the first time the organization has specifically surveyed teens regarding their usage of AI chatbots. The findings indicate that approximately 70% of American teens have interacted with a chatbot at least once. Among the daily users, 16% indicated they engage with chatbots several times a day or nearly constantly. While many see these AI tools as beneficial for learning and homework, some teenagers have also turned to them for companionship or even romantic interactions, prompting concerns from experts about their overall impact on youth development. The study surveyed nearly 1,500 teens between the ages of 13 and 17, ensuring a representative sample across various demographics, including gender, age, race, ethnicity, and household income. ChatGPT emerged as the most popular chatbot, with over half of the respondents reporting its use. Other notable AI chatbots included Google's Gemini, Meta AI, Microsoft’s Copilot, Character.AI, and Anthropic’s Claude. In response to a series of lawsuits from families claiming that these chatbots contributed to mental health crises among their teens, Character.AI has ceased allowing teenagers to engage in interactive chats with its AI characters. Interestingly, the usage of AI chatbots was nearly equal among genders, with 64% of girls and 63% of boys reporting usage. Teens aged 15 to 17 were more likely to have used chatbots (68%) compared to those aged 13 to 14 (57%). Additionally, the survey found that chatbot usage slightly increased with household income. The report highlighted that about 70% of Black and Hispanic teens have used AI chatbots, a figure that exceeds the 58% of White teens. The study's findings come on the heels of criticisms directed at major AI firms like OpenAI and Character.AI, which are under scrutiny for their role in potentially exacerbating mental health issues among teenagers. In light of these challenges, OpenAI has announced plans to implement parental controls and age restrictions, while Character.AI has imposed limits on interactions for minors. Meta has also faced backlash after reports surfaced regarding its AI chatbot engaging in inappropriate conversations with minors. In response, the company plans to enhance its policies and will soon allow parents to restrict their teens' access to AI characters on Instagram. Safety advocates, including Common Sense Media, have cautioned parents against allowing children under 18 to use companion-like AI chatbots, citing significant risks. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential for AI to encourage cheating in academic settings, despite arguments that such technology could offer personalized educational support. Meanwhile, companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic are eager to incorporate their chatbots into educational frameworks, having already launched an AI instruction academy for educators. Notably, Microsoft has emphasized the safety of its Copilot, with its CEO asserting that it will never facilitate romantic or sexual conversations, ensuring a secure environment for both parents and students.
