Studio Ghibli joins other publishers in urging OpenAI to stop using copyrighted works

The Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) of Japan, which includes prominent figures like Studio Ghibli, has formally requested that OpenAI cease utilizing copyrighted works to enhance its AI models without obtaining permission. Studio Ghibli, renowned for timeless classics such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, has raised concerns over AI image generators that replicate its unique hand-drawn style. Since the launch of OpenAI’s image generator in March, users have been engaging the tool to transform their selfies and pet photos into a style reminiscent of Ghibli's animation. Notably, even OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, temporarily altered his profile image on social media to reflect this 'Ghiblified' aesthetic. Although Hayao Miyazaki, a pivotal figure at Studio Ghibli, has not publicly addressed the recent surge of AI-generated interpretations of his art, he previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated 3D animation, describing it as “utterly disgusting” and an affront to the essence of life itself. In light of increasing dissatisfaction among Japanese creators regarding the use of their works in AI training, CODA has urged OpenAI to refrain from leveraging creative outputs from its members without explicit consent. As OpenAI prepares to broaden access to its Sora video generator, the stakes are high. The organization has been criticized for a perceived approach of 'use first, apologize later' concerning copyrighted material. Legal experts suggest that while OpenAI could voluntarily comply with these requests, failure to do so may result in legal action from affected rights holders. Current copyright laws worldwide are struggling to keep pace with advancements in AI technology, but CODA insists that these practices may breach Japan’s copyright regulations, potentially establishing significant legal precedents regarding AI training and creative ownership.
