Stripe's CEO says he loves asking AI questions — but it falls short in another area

Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe, has expressed his enthusiasm for leveraging AI, particularly for its ability to answer factual inquiries. In a recent discussion with Cursor’s CEO, Michael Truell, Collison emphasized the effectiveness of tools like xAI’s Grok, which he uses to enhance his reading experience. He appreciates using AI in voice mode, allowing him to ask questions aloud while he reads, and finds the responses to be extremely beneficial. However, when it comes to writing, Collison draws a firm line. He admits that he often finds AI-generated text lacking in personal touch and style. "I wish they were useful for writing," he remarked. Despite his attempts to guide the AI to produce more personalized content, he finds the results unsatisfactory, stating, "My personal style differs from the personal style, so to speak, of the models. In some self-centered way, when I write, I want to use my personal style." Collison's perspective resonates with a broader sentiment among technology leaders. Many, like LinkedIn's COO, Dan Shapero, have expressed that while they utilize AI for writing advice, they prefer crafting their own narratives to maintain a personal voice. This sentiment is echoed in the tech community, where executives are increasingly vocal about integrating AI into their routines. For instance, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has shared that he uses Copilot to streamline his Outlook and Teams communications, employing various custom agents to assist with meeting preparations and research. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that he heavily relies on AI for parenting support, especially in researching child development. In an educational twist, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang uses AI as a daily tutor to grasp new subjects, often starting with simpler explanations before progressing to advanced concepts. This approach highlights the diverse applications of AI across different sectors and roles, showcasing both the technology's strengths and its limitations in personal expression.
