Stripe wants to turn your AI costs into a profit center

On Monday, Stripe announced an innovative feature aimed at assisting AI startups and other businesses in effectively managing the costs associated with AI model usage. This new functionality not only allows companies to pass these costs onto their customers but also enables them to apply a markup on top of the base expenses. For example, a startup developing an AI application can now automatically add a 30% markup to the token costs incurred from the model provider. As Stripe explains, this allows businesses to maintain a consistent profit margin over the raw costs of large language model (LLM) tokens across different providers. The billing automation streamlines the process, letting startups select their preferred AI models and automatically track API pricing and token usage. Various pricing strategies have emerged among AI startups, including tiered subscription models that impose usage limits. When these caps are exceeded, additional fees may apply. A case in point is Cursor, which recently adjusted its pricing from unlimited access to a model that restricts usage and charges for any overage. Such models are crucial, especially for startups driven by customer engagement, as increased usage can lead to soaring expenses with model providers like OpenAI and Google Gemini. In addition to this billing feature, Stripe has also introduced an AI gateway that enables users to access multiple models, selecting the most suitable one for their tasks. Notably, this new billing tool is compatible with popular third-party gateways, including those offered by Vercel and OpenRouter. OpenRouter, for instance, provides access to over 300 models with a flat 5.5% markup on token fees, along with budget control options. Currently, Stripe is not implementing its own markup on the gateway, according to a tweet from a product manager. The feature is still in waitlist mode, but if Stripe can successfully assist startups in tracking and billing AI model expenses, it could significantly impact their profitability. Stripe has yet to provide further details on the general availability of this feature.
