Stripe is stepping into the future of finance with the launch of Link, a digital wallet designed for the age of autonomous AI agents. This innovative platform enables these agents to handle tasks such as shopping, booking reservations, and purchasing tickets, all while maintaining robust security. At their annual conference, Stripe showcased Link’s capabilities, which include connecting various payment methods, tracking expenditures, and managing recurring subscriptions. Notably, Link allows users to integrate AI agents, enabling them to make purchases on the user’s behalf without compromising sensitive payment information. Accessible on web, iOS, and Android, Link offers a comprehensive suite of features typical of digital wallets. Users can link credit cards, bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, and buy now/pay later options. Additionally, it simplifies online shopping by storing essential details for checkout, such as billing and shipping addresses. One standout feature of Link is its 90-day purchase protection for eligible transactions from select merchants. The wallet’s compatibility with autonomous AI agents, including popular platforms like OpenClaw, positions it as a forward-thinking solution in the rapidly growing field of AI experimentation. Despite the convenience this automation brings, many users are cautious about exposing their financial data to AI agents. To address these concerns, Link employs a secure method where users can authorize their agents to access the wallet without revealing payment credentials directly. This process starts with granting the agent access through an OAuth authentication flow, followed by the agent submitting a spending request for user approval. Currently, Link supports traditional payment methods, with plans to introduce additional payment options, including agentic tokens and stablecoins, in the near future. The system also includes a notification feature that prompts users to review and approve transactions before any payment information is shared. Looking ahead, Stripe aims to enhance user control, allowing individuals to set spending limits and decide when their agents can operate without explicit approval. Built on Stripe's new Issuing for agents framework, Link facilitates the issuance of virtual cards for agents, ensuring real-time transaction visibility and spending controls. This approach not only safeguards user payment credentials but also provides an efficient alternative for developers and businesses creating AI personal assistants, eliminating the need to build a wallet from scratch.
