Strava declares war on scrapers ahead of IPO

In a decisive move to safeguard its data, Strava is tightening access to its platform as it prepares for an initial public offering (IPO). The fitness and social running company is responding to the growing trend of AI startups that aggressively scrape data from the internet, often disregarding long-standing web conventions such as robots.txt files. These files indicate which parts of a website should not be accessed by automated crawlers. To combat this scraping issue, Strava has implemented enhanced security measures that will restrict access to certain data only to authenticated users. Previously, users could freely view information like public profiles and fitness club listings without needing to log in. Now, this data will be protected behind a login, ensuring that unauthorized AI scrapers cannot easily obtain it. The company is also altering its developer access model. Strava will now charge a flat monthly fee of $11.99 for all developers accessing its API, a shift from the previous tiered program that allowed free access for basic functionality. While the pricing may vary by region, this change aims to manage the increased demand for data while still supporting Strava's growing developer community, which has expanded from 185,000 to 241,000 members in just one year. Additionally, Strava plans to adopt the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a new standard designed to give developers structured access to external data. This will provide Strava with more control over what is shared with external applications. The company also intends to phase out certain API endpoints to further protect user data, which may pose challenges for existing applications that rely on this information. In a recent interview, Strava's CEO, Michael Martin, expressed concerns over unchecked AI scraping, stating that it could jeopardize the integrity of the public internet. He noted a noticeable decline in website performance due to the overwhelming load created by AI scraping and poorly constructed third-party applications. Strava has already faced issues with server overload and has refused data licensing deals from major AI labs, including Perplexity, which attempted to obscure its scraping efforts through aggregator services. As Strava prepares for its IPO, these measures signal a commitment to data integrity, a crucial factor for attracting potential investors. Unlike other platforms like Reddit, which have implemented costly API access based on usage, Strava's flat fee structure aims to maintain a thriving developer ecosystem while ensuring user data is secure. "We want users to feel ownership of their data and be comfortable with how we manage it," Martin emphasized, highlighting Strava's balance between user trust and developer support.
