Stilta raises $10.5M from a16z and YC to help companies rediscover the patents they forgot they had

Oskar Block has always had a knack for entrepreneurship, launching his first startup at just 18, focused on creating machine learning models for sports betting. "I've always been attracted to tackling complex data challenges," he shared with TechCrunch. His journey led him through consulting, where he guided companies in integrating AI, gaining insights into how to encourage large enterprises to adopt new technologies. Block then transitioned to an autonomous trucking firm, where he observed the cumbersome and protracted nature of the patent process firsthand. The inspiration for Stilta emerged during a dinner conversation with his friend and colleague, Tobias Estreen, whose father, a patent attorney, described his repetitive daily routine. Block and Estreen recognized a significant opportunity and, along with partners Petrus Werner and Oscar Adamsson, founded Stilta. This innovative AI platform aims to streamline the research and analysis involved in intellectual property cases, addressing the traditionally labor-intensive aspects that have made patent litigation both slow and costly. On Tuesday, Stilta announced a successful seed funding round of $10.5 million, led by the prominent venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Other notable investors include Y Combinator and professionals from organizations such as OpenAI, Legora, and Lovable. Block, now CEO of Stilta, described the platform's functionality as akin to a team of lawyers working in unison. Users simply input a patent number along with relevant documents, and the AI agents initiate a comprehensive search, identifying potentially conflicting patents and compiling pertinent filing and court history. "They operate in parallel, converging in a manner reminiscent of a room full of specialists, but they can achieve a scale beyond that of any human team," Block explained, emphasizing that the human operator remains in control of the analysis. Stilta's outputs are designed to meet litigation standards, producing reports and claim charts with meticulous citations for every piece of evidence. Other companies, such as Solve Intelligence and DeepIP, are also navigating this burgeoning legal tech landscape, which has gained momentum amid the AI revolution. Block noted that while some segments of the legal industry are experiencing rapid AI-driven transformation, others may take longer to adapt. He observed that AI is increasingly handling analytical tasks, though human judgment still dictates case outcomes. Many businesses are sitting on patents that they have failed to utilize or even analyze due to prohibitive costs. Stilta aims to dismantle these financial barriers, making the patent litigation process more accessible and efficient. This shift could empower companies to reassess the untapped value within their patent portfolios, fundamentally altering their approach to intellectual property. "The real question isn't whether the legal system is ready for AI, but whether companies are ready for the possibilities that arise when we eliminate the analytical bottleneck," Block concluded.
