Venus Williams-backed WeWard can now lock your apps until you hit your steps

WeWard, the innovative app that rewards users for their walking habits, has unveiled a new feature called "Walking Mode." This functionality empowers users to restrict access to selected apps until they reach a predetermined step count, incentivizing them to be more active while simultaneously reducing their screen time. For instance, if a user aims to decrease their scrolling on platforms like TikTok or Instagram, they can set a goal to walk 3,000 steps before gaining access to these apps. This flexibility allows users to customize both their step targets and the apps they wish to control. Previously, WeWard motivated users to walk by offering "Wards," a form of in-app currency that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, or charitable contributions. The app also features a competitive leaderboard, allowing friends to engage in friendly challenges. With the new screen time management feature, WeWard aligns with the growing demand for tools that help limit excessive phone and social media usage. Backed by tennis legend and angel investor Venus Williams, WeWard boasts an impressive user base of 30 million across 29 countries, including 4 million in the United States. The app has reportedly increased walking time by nearly 25% among its users. Yves Benchimol, co-founder of WeWard, expressed a vision for the future of app development, stating, "We believe the next generation of products should be designed to create healthier behaviors in the real world, not simply capture more attention. Walking Mode is our contribution to that vision, and we hope it inspires a broader conversation about mindful design and how the industry defines success." Interestingly, WeWard users typically engage with the app for only a few minutes each day, a statistic the company views as favorable since it indicates the app's focus is not on monopolizing user attention. Unlike many reward-based applications that monetize through user data, WeWard generates revenue through in-app purchases, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, and advertising, ensuring user privacy remains a priority.
