Valve has recently taken significant steps to elevate the gaming experience with the release of the SteamOS 3.8.0 preview. This update comes amidst ongoing challenges in hardware availability, particularly for the Steam Machine desktop, which has struggled due to skyrocketing prices and scarce memory and storage components. The ongoing demand from AI data centers has further complicated matters, leaving limited resources for gaming enthusiasts and the development of devices like the Steam Frame VR headset. Even the well-established Steam Deck is currently facing stock shortages as a result of these component issues. Despite these challenges, Valve remains committed to enhancing its software offerings. The latest update not only improves the Steam Deck but also extends its support to third-party gaming handhelds and upcoming Steam Machine hardware. Notable improvements stem from various upstream Linux components, including a new Arch Linux base and an updated graphics driver. The SteamOS 3.8 update integrates version 6.16 of the Linux kernel and introduces a refreshed KDE Plasma desktop environment for Desktop Mode, which now utilizes Wayland instead of X11. These enhancements promise better compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD platforms, as well as improved functionality for third-party controller accessories. Additionally, the update accommodates newer AMD chips, including the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, along with a range of third-party handhelds such as the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and the MSI Claw, one of the few Intel-powered gaming devices. With this major update, Valve is not only addressing current hardware limitations but also paving the way for a more versatile gaming ecosystem that embraces both established and emerging technologies.
