
In a discreet operation, Rocket Lab successfully launched a small satellite from New Zealand on Friday, marking a significant military exercise aimed at assessing the US Space Force's capability to swiftly respond to crises in low-Earth orbit. This launch, which received minimal prior notice, was only hinted at through a warning issued to pilots and mariners to avoid the rocket's trajectory. Unlike many of its missions, Rocket Lab opted not to provide a livestream of the event, leaving many unaware of the operation. As of Monday morning, neither Rocket Lab nor Space Force officials had made any formal public announcements regarding the launch. However, the US military's database of space objects was updated shortly after the event, revealing the new satellite, named Victus Haze Puma, which had been launched from Rocket Lab’s private spaceport located at Māhia Peninsula. Victus Haze is now cataloged in a polar orbit, situated between 215 miles and 286 miles (347 by 461 km) above Earth, with an inclination of approximately 97.5 degrees relative to the equator. This mission represents the latest in the US military's efforts to enhance its responsive capabilities in space. The Space Force had previously outlined plans for this mission in 2024, selecting Rocket Lab and True Anomaly to develop and deploy two satellites into low-Earth orbit. The strategic concept involves launching a small satellite from True Anomaly that mimics a satellite from a potential adversary, such as China or Russia. In a rapid response scenario, Rocket Lab’s satellite would be ready to launch on short notice to inspect the True Anomaly spacecraft, effectively allowing military officials to evaluate potential threats in orbit. The Victus Haze mission underscores the growing importance of rapid response capabilities in space as the US military collaborates with commercial partners to ensure national security in an increasingly contested domain.
