'We're not trying to be Silicon Valley': Inside Station F, where Paris is incubating the next tech and AI juggernauts

In the vibrant thirteenth district of Paris lies Station F, a once-abandoned rail depot transformed into a bustling startup incubator that has become the heart of France's tech revolution. Spanning an impressive 366,000 square feet, this space is designed to foster innovation, drawing parallels to the famed Silicon Valley. However, its director, Roxanne Varza, emphasizes that Station F is not aspiring to replicate the American model. "While we admire many successful incubators, we are carving our own path," Varza stated during a recent interview. The political landscape has played a significant role in attracting international entrepreneurs, particularly from the U.S. Varza noted that events like the election of Donald Trump and Brexit have prompted many founders to seek opportunities in France. Today, the campus hosts entrepreneurs from 70 different nationalities, with American and British founders notably represented. Despite facing stiff competition, Paris is rapidly gaining ground on its global counterparts. According to technology research platform Dealroom, the city has been recognized as Europe's leading tech hub, surpassing London. From 2017 to 2024, Parisian startups have seen their collective enterprise value skyrocket by 5.3 times, leading the charge among European tech centers. A notable trend at Station F is the influx of climate tech entrepreneurs from the U.S., spurred by diminishing support for green initiatives in their home country. Alexandre Duval, co-founder of materials discovery startup Entalpic, reported a surge of interest from American job seekers, prompting him to reconsider moving his startup out of the incubator. He remarked, "The resources available here, from meeting spaces to networking events, are invaluable." Founded in 2017 by French billionaire Xavier Niel, Station F is committed to nurturing entrepreneurship. Each month, approximately 40 startups are selected to join the program, which provides access to essential resources and mentorship from industry leaders, including major tech firms like Meta and Microsoft. The incubator's Founders Program offers workshops and masterclasses while taking a mere 1% equity stake, a more favorable arrangement compared to the 6% typically demanded by Y Combinator. Station F has established itself as a vibrant hub for innovation, hosting high-profile visitors from various sectors, including the tech giant GitHub and the prime minister of Ethiopia. Varza highlighted that the primary draw for many is the extensive networking opportunities available at the incubator. The rise of artificial intelligence has been a focal point for Station F, bolstered by supportive government initiatives under President Emmanuel Macron. In 2023, French AI startups secured $1.9 billion in funding, with that figure rising over 50% to nearly $3 billion in 2024. Major funding rounds included Mistral's impressive $600 million in June and H's notable $220 million seed round in May. Currently, around 40% of France's AI startups are emerging from Station F, with the incubator playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the tech ecosystem. Varza noted that the incubator is actively engaged in discussions on how to foster further growth in the AI sector through fiscal incentives. The collaborative atmosphere at Station F encourages founders to connect and share ideas, which has led to remarkable innovations. Founders work closely together, often leading to unexpected partnerships and successful pivots. Varza expressed excitement about future international collaborations, aiming to extend the reach of Station F beyond Paris and strengthen its influence across Europe.
