Sankaet Pathak, co-founder and CEO of Foundation, argues that there is a pressing moral obligation to utilize humanoid robots in combat settings instead of mundane domestic roles. "I believe the focus on home applications is misguided," Pathak stated. "People can manage household chores; we should aim for more impactful applications." Modern warfare has increasingly integrated drone technology and robotics, facilitating pinpoint attacks while reducing costs. However, this evolution in military capabilities still exposes civilians to significant risks, particularly in urban warfare. Pathak critiques the current military strategy, often characterized by brute force, which jeopardizes soldiers' lives and leads to extensive collateral damage. He envisions a future where humanoid robots can execute precise operations, such as target extraction, with minimal risk. Recently, Foundation conducted a significant test involving its Phantom robots in Ukraine, showcasing their potential for military support tasks such as reconnaissance and logistics. Pathak described the intense atmosphere of the warzone: "You hear bombs and power outages; it’s a battlefield outside Kyiv." The demonstration involved the robots performing supply pickups, emphasizing their capability to transport materials while keeping human soldiers out of harm's way. Following this pilot, the startup garnered notable interest in its technology and secured a $24 million contract with the Pentagon. Eric Trump has also joined the company as chief strategy advisor. However, Pathak acknowledges the considerable technological challenges that lie ahead. There remains a significant gap between a humanoid robot capable of basic tasks and one prepared for combat. Key issues include improving battery life, durability against environmental factors, and developing reliable manipulation skills. Pathak is optimistic that these engineering challenges can be addressed within a few years, potentially enabling humanoid robots to conduct complex missions within a decade. Nevertheless, ethical concerns surrounding autonomous weapons persist, particularly regarding accountability in combat scenarios. Pathak emphasizes the necessity of human oversight in life-or-death decisions, a principle already observed in drone operations. The broader defense sector is increasingly advocating for robotics and autonomous systems as vital to national security. Experts highlight the urgency of maintaining a technological edge over adversaries, particularly China, in the realm of AI and military capabilities. Foundation’s bold stance on employing humanoids in warfare underscores the critical dialogue surrounding the future of military technology.
