Why these startup CEOs don’t think AI will replace human roles

As the valuation and utilization of AI technologies soar, the discussion surrounding their impact on the job market intensifies. While some studies indicate that AI could potentially displace numerous roles by automating a variety of tasks, many analysts argue that this shift may lead to the creation of new opportunities, suggesting that the effects of displacement might be temporary. David Shim, CEO of Read AI, a company focused on meeting intelligence and notetaking, shared insights during the recent Web Summit in Qatar. He emphasized that despite the growing prevalence of AI tools, human judgment will remain crucial in determining actions within workplaces. Shim likened this technological evolution to the transition from paper maps to GPS navigation: "There’s always going to be a human in the middle," he stated, illustrating how technology can facilitate rather than eliminate human roles. Shim acknowledged that certain sectors, such as advertising, might see a reduction in human positions due to automation. Yet, he stressed that there will still be a demand for employees to manage these automated processes effectively. Abdullah Asiri, founder of the AI-centric consumer support startup Lucidya, echoed these sentiments, asserting that AI will likely replace specific tasks rather than entire roles. He observed that clients utilizing Lucidya often see their customer support agents transition into new responsibilities, such as supervisory positions or roles focused on relationship-building and business development, thus utilizing the time saved by automation. Shim noted the significant advantage that AI-powered notetakers provide, allowing professionals to shift their focus to more critical tasks. "Nobody wants to sit down and take meeting notes; by alleviating that burden, employees can respond to customers more effectively and make informed decisions faster," he remarked. Both Read AI and Lucidya are leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity while maintaining lean teams. Currently, Read AI operates with a five-person customer service team that supports millions of users each month. The startup has reported that its sales tool, powered by AI, has helped secure deals totaling $200 million by utilizing insights from CRM systems like HubSpot and Salesforce. Lucidya’s Asiri pointed out that the aspiration for any business is to achieve scalable results without proportionately increasing headcount. He highlighted the growing need for employees who are adept at utilizing AI, noting, "The talent market for those skilled in applying AI is still developing, and candidates who can build AI solutions will be highly sought after." Reflecting on the evolving perception of AI in the workplace, Shim mentioned that a few years ago, many were skeptical about AI notetakers in meetings. However, acceptance has grown, provided users are given control over recording processes. Asiri added that Lucidya openly informs users when voice AI is employed for communication, emphasizing that customers prioritize issue resolution over whether an AI or a human is addressing their concerns. "Customers care about swift and accurate resolutions, regardless of who or what provides them," he concluded.
