Startup CEO says he's proud his 4-person team racked up a $113,000 monthly AI bill

A startup CEO is embracing a significant monthly expenditure on AI, viewing it as a positive indicator of progress rather than a cause for concern. In a recent LinkedIn post, Amos Bar-Joseph, the CEO of Swan AI, proudly showcased a receipt from Anthropic totaling $113,421.87, declaring it "the most proud I've ever been of an invoice." This perspective reflects a growing trend among technology leaders who believe that investing in AI can serve as a substitute for traditional hiring practices. Swan AI specializes in developing AI agents for sales and marketing teams and evaluates its costs in terms of "tokens"—the units of data processed by AI systems—comparing these expenses to conventional business metrics such as sales pipelines and customer support performance. Bar-Joseph shared with Business Insider that his compact team of four is already generating annual recurring revenue (ARR) in the seven-figure range, having added approximately $200,000 in ARR just in the last week. He emphasized that their target is to achieve $10 million of ARR per employee, which he described as their ultimate objective. He is committed to increasing AI expenditures as a strategy to scale the business without the need for additional staff. "The pivotal question we consider is whether this spending allows us to grow without increasing headcount. If the answer is yes, then it's working," he explained. Other executives in Silicon Valley are echoing this sentiment, with some encouraging employees to increase their AI-related spending. Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has expressed a desire for employees to invest at least $250,000 in AI tokens, while Box's CEO Aaron Levie anticipates that computing budgets will keep rising across various industries. However, not all are optimistic about unchecked AI spending. Chamath Palihapitiya, founder of the 8090 startup incubator, cautioned about escalating costs, revealing that his expenses have tripled every three months while revenues have stagnated. Swan AI has not disclosed specific revenue figures, leaving the relationship between its AI investments and overall profitability somewhat unclear. The recent invoice from Anthropic, which has a due date of April 15, represents a significant increase compared to prior months’ bills, which were $51,217.56 in February and $27,690.69 in March. Bar-Joseph noted that his company has consistently spent more on AI initiatives than on salaries for its four employees. He clarified that scaling the business could potentially lead to hiring more human workers. "I want to emphasize that this is not an anti-human approach. On the contrary, we intend to hire when we reach the limits of what AI can achieve. We're far from that point right now," he told Business Insider.
