Robotaxis drives miles just to get cleaned and charged; this new startup wants to fix that

As you wander through San Francisco, it’s common to spot empty autonomous vehicles gliding along the streets, either waiting for passengers or heading to distant depots for cleaning and charging. These unproductive miles, known in the industry as 'deadhead miles,' present a significant challenge for robotaxi companies striving for profitability. Aseon Labs, a startup based in Redwood City, California, believes it has a solution. The company proposes the creation of parking space-sized automated pods, which could be strategically placed throughout urban areas to inspect, clean, and charge robotaxis. Co-founded by a team that previously launched a battery-swapping startup, Aseon refers to these innovative structures as 'robotic pit stops' designed specifically for the robotaxi sector. This concept has garnered substantial interest from investors, with Aseon Labs securing $10 million in a seed funding round led by Crane Venture Partners. Additional backing came from notable entities like Y Combinator, Expa (founded by Uber co-founder Garrett Camp), Robin Hood Ventures, and Founders Capital, along with contributions from angel investors including former Google executive Adrian Aoun and others from notable tech companies. Currently in its nascent stages, Aseon Labs plans to use the seed investment to develop five prototypes of these autonomous pods, expand its robotics and engineering team from six to around a dozen, and acquire the necessary real estate to establish its operational network, as shared by co-founder and CEO George Kalligeros. Kalligeros emphasized the need for increased utilization of robotaxis to achieve economic parity with traditional ride-hailing services. He stated, "You need the robotaxi in continuous operation during the entirety of the demand curve of the day," underscoring the potential of their pod network to significantly reduce deadhead miles and transform robotaxi services into profitable ventures. With backgrounds outside the autonomous vehicle sector, Kalligeros and COO Dan Keene leverage their experience in hardware and real estate development. Previously, Kalligeros worked as a mechanical design engineer at both Bentley Motors and Tesla before co-founding Pushme, a company focused on battery-swapping infrastructure for micromobility fleets. Aseon Labs’ vision involves deploying smaller, independently powered autonomous pods across cities, which can be relocated as needed. These units, equipped with cameras for vehicle inspections and robotic arms for retrieving lost items, are categorized as temporary structures, allowing for quicker deployment without lengthy permitting processes. The pods can operate on propane generators or connect to existing power sources through partnerships with EV charging companies. Although initially staffed, the goal is for these units to function autonomously. Instead of attempting to address every possible issue, Aseon Labs intends to harness computer vision and AI technologies to identify problems that the pod should not attempt to resolve. For instance, if a camera detects a mess, such as melted chocolate, the robotic arm will refrain from intervening, and the vehicle will be sent to a central depot for human intervention. While Aseon Labs has yet to formalize contracts with any robotaxi companies, the interest in their innovative model is widespread. Kalligeros remarked, "Pretty much everyone wants to try it," indicating a strong potential for collaboration in the future.
