In a significant development, the Indian government has granted a permit to Starlink, contingent upon the company's commitment to adhere to local regulations and security protocols. This decision, announced by Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, ensures that Starlink cannot engage in the copying or decryption of Indian data outside the country. The minister highlighted that these security requirements necessitate satellite communication providers to establish earth station gateways within India. This measure is crucial for routing communications from satellites directly to users, thereby preventing any Indian user data from being transmitted through foreign gateways. Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, a U.S. firm, received a Unified License after agreeing to the comprehensive terms, which are also mandatory for all satellite communication providers in the region. Key stipulations include that no Indian user data may be mirrored on systems or servers located abroad, and all traffic must remain within Indian borders. Furthermore, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has consulted the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) regarding the spectrum assignment terms and pricing related to satellite communication services. These recommendations were received on May 9, reflecting the growing importance of satellite-based communications in India’s economic landscape. The minister expressed optimism that this emerging sector will create job opportunities within the country, as it involves various activities such as installation, operation, and maintenance of telecom networks, including user terminal equipment.
