SpaceX’s Starlink nabs American Airlines contract, another win for its IPO

In a significant move for in-flight connectivity, American Airlines announced on Tuesday its plans to equip over 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft with SpaceX's Starlink service, set to roll out in early 2024. This partnership marks yet another triumph for SpaceX's satellite communications network, which stands as the only division of the company currently generating substantial revenue. The agreement not only enhances Starlink's financial prospects but also positions SpaceX favorably against competitors, including Amazon's Project Kuiper and established providers like Viasat. Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites are designed to deliver high-speed internet access to both individual consumers and commercial enterprises, such as airlines. SpaceX's outreach to the aviation sector has already seen success, with several major airlines, including United, Southwest, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa Group, British Airways, and Alaska Airlines, having implemented Starlink on various aircraft. While American Airlines is the latest to join this growing list, it's important to note that not all of its fleet will receive the Starlink upgrade. Specifically, the new Airbus A321XLR and A320neo models will be equipped, but the Boeing aircraft in the airline's roster will not be included in this contract. This deal provides a significant boost for SpaceX as it prepares for its much-anticipated IPO next month, expected to be the largest in history.
