In a significant move following its recent approval to provide satellite internet services in India, Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt. Ltd, owned by Elon Musk, has commenced its hiring process within the country. The company is actively seeking candidates for various positions in finance and accounting, including payments manager, accounting manager, senior treasury analyst, and tax manager, as reported on the SpaceX website and LinkedIn. All these roles are based in Bengaluru. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is on the lookout for an accounting manager in India to ensure compliance with financial reporting obligations as it expands its global presence. According to the job description, this position plays a crucial role in establishing and scaling accounting, reporting, and statutory compliance activities to support operations in India. The company emphasizes its commitment to local talent, stating that it will prioritize applicants who have the legal right to work in India and will not consider remote or hybrid work arrangements. Additionally, Starlink is in the process of installing the necessary infrastructure to launch its satellite internet services, expected by year's end or early next year. The company has also initiated security trials to comply with Indian government regulations. Entering into the competitive landscape, Starlink will face rivals such as Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite, both of which have also been granted permissions to provide satellite internet services. However, the allocation of spectrum remains a significant challenge, as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) continue to work on this issue. Starlink aims to deliver global internet access, particularly benefiting rural and remote areas where connectivity is often unreliable or absent. At a recent industry event, Starlink's director, Parnil Urdhwareshe, highlighted the importance of including rural users in their service offerings, noting that a substantial portion of Starlink's capacity could go underutilized without them. Despite concerns from telecom operators about potential competition for market share, Urdhwareshe reassured that Starlink's goal is to complement existing services, ensuring quality internet access across urban and rural regions. The pricing of Starlink's broadband services has yet to be revealed. Currently, the company operates over 8,400 satellites in orbit, a testament to its ambitious global reach. Starlink's journey in India began back in 2021 when it set up operations under country director Sanjay Bhargava, who later exited after the government mandated the cessation of pre-bookings at that time. The company complied by refunding over 5,000 customers their booking amounts. In July, Starlink secured authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion & Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) for its Gen 1 constellation capacity, marking a pivotal step in its entry into the Indian market after a lengthy three-year wait.
