Starlink kept me connected to the Internet without fail—until Thursday

On Thursday, a significant disruption in the Starlink satellite Internet network left subscribers without service for over two hours, marking the longest outage since SpaceX launched the service for consumer use nearly five years ago. This interruption impacted both civilian and military users, presenting a considerable challenge for those dependent on Starlink for essential communications in various fields, including military operations and healthcare. Michael Nicolls, SpaceX's vice president of Starlink engineering, reported on X that the outage lasted approximately 150 minutes. He attributed the disruption to failures in key internal software services that are vital to the network's operation. "We apologize for the temporary disruption in our service; we are deeply committed to providing a highly reliable network and will fully root cause this issue to ensure it does not happen again," Nicolls stated. Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, also expressed his apologies for the service interruption on X, reassuring users that the company would address the underlying issues to prevent future occurrences. The Ukrainian military, which has been at the forefront of utilizing Starlink services for its operations, felt the impact of the outage severely. The commander of Ukraine's drone forces, Robert Brovdi, confirmed that the disruption affected military activities amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. "Starlink went down across the entire front," Brovdi shared on Telegram. He noted that combat operations occurred without the usual communications, and reconnaissance missions were conducted using alternative methods. Brovdi emphasized the critical nature of having diverse communication channels, especially during time-sensitive military operations. He highlighted that this outage serves as a reminder of the potential vulnerabilities in relying solely on cloud services for military needs, particularly in the context of battlefield drone reconnaissance. Oleksandr Dmitriev, the founder of a Ukrainian system that consolidates data from numerous drone teams on the frontline, echoed these sentiments, pointing out the risks of depending too heavily on single connectivity solutions.
