Musk's Starlink suffers apparent outage as SpaceX launches more satellites

Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, experienced a temporary outage on Monday, leading to thousands of users reporting disruptions on Downdetector, a platform that monitors tech-related issues. This incident marks the second outage in just two weeks for the service. Previously, on July 24, Starlink faced a significant outage that lasted several hours. SpaceX's Vice President of Starlink Engineering, Michael Nicolls, attributed that disruption to a failure in key internal software services crucial for the network's core operations. This outage coincided with the launch of T-Mobile's Starlink-based satellite service, designed to offer connectivity in areas lacking traditional cell towers. Currently, Starlink provides internet services to over six million users across 140 countries, although the company has not disclosed specific subscriber churn or retention rates. With more than 7,000 active broadband satellites in orbit, Starlink's satellite constellation is considerably larger than its competitors, according to findings by astronomer Jonathan McDowell. On the same day as the outage, SpaceX successfully launched another batch of satellites to enhance its Starlink network from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California. The company has plans to double its launch frequency from Vandenberg, aiming to increase the number of annual launches from 50 to approximately 100. However, this ambitious plan faces opposition, as the California Coastal Commission recently voted unanimously against the U.S. Space Force's application for the increased launch volume. The Commission raised concerns about the potential impacts on nearby communities and local wildlife, suggesting that SpaceX and Space Force officials have not adequately assessed these effects. In a related move, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at relaxing environmental regulations that some, including Musk, view as obstacles to commercial space ventures.
