Starbucks has officially appointed Anand Varadarajan as its new Chief Technology Officer, with his tenure commencing on January 19. This strategic move is part of CEO Brian Niccol’s ongoing initiative to implement a comprehensive technology overhaul aimed at boosting operational efficiency in the company’s stores. Varadarajan succeeds Deb Hall Lefevre, who left the role in September. Following her departure, Ningyu Chen was appointed as interim CTO while the company sought a permanent replacement. With an impressive background, Varadarajan brings nearly two decades of experience from Amazon, where he was instrumental in leading technology and supply chain operations for the global grocery division. He also has a history with Oracle, which adds to his extensive expertise in enterprise software, logistics, and large-scale retail systems. This leadership transition aligns with Starbucks’ recent operational reset. In late October, the company reported its first quarter of comparable sales growth in almost 18 months, indicating initial success in Niccol’s turnaround strategy within the U.S. With Varadarajan at the technological helm, Starbucks is poised to ramp up its investments in digital solutions and backend systems that aim to streamline workflows, support employees, and enhance the overall in-store customer experience.
