Starbase hires Cameron County to police its streets and jail its offenders

Starbase, a newly incorporated city near SpaceX's expansive rocket facility in South Texas, has found a unique solution for its law enforcement needs. While it currently lacks its own police department, the city has turned to Cameron County for support. In a significant move, Starbase has formalized agreements that designate sheriff’s deputies from Cameron County as its primary law enforcement resource. These agreements, which were approved in September and took effect recently, outline a comprehensive plan for policing the area. One of the agreements commits the county to assign eight deputies to Starbase, although only two will be on patrol at any given time. Additionally, the county will provide jail services, charging Starbase $100 per day for each inmate and covering other costs related to medical or psychiatric care. This arrangement allows Starbase to quickly establish a functioning criminal justice system without the need for extensive infrastructure development. While such partnerships are common in Texas, particularly among smaller towns, Starbase's situation is distinct. Its population is limited, primarily consisting of SpaceX employees, and the city was officially recognized only after SpaceX developed the surrounding area. The contracts also include provisions for enhanced security during special events, likely to coincide with rocket launches that draw large crowds to Boca Chica. This strategic move underscores Starbase's identity as more than just a typical municipality; it is a company town focused on advancing SpaceX's ambitious goals. Despite having its own elected officials, the enforcement of laws in Starbase is ultimately managed by Cameron County. As stipulated in the agreements, public safety records, including body camera footage, will remain under county jurisdiction, meaning residents with concerns about law enforcement will need to address them with county officials, not their local leaders. In this way, SpaceX has established a community that operates under its own unique governance model, while still relying on the county for law enforcement.
