SpaceX’s Starbase city is getting its own court

In a significant development for its burgeoning community, Starbase, the company town established by SpaceX in Texas, is taking steps to establish its own judicial system. Less than a year since its inception, the town now boasts a volunteer fire department and is in the process of creating a police department. The latest initiative involves a proposed ordinance aimed at forming a municipal court. During a recent city commission meeting, the city administrator presented the proposal, which includes the appointment of a part-time judge, prosecutor, and court clerk. Until a judge is officially appointed for a two-year term, the town's mayor will temporarily fulfill this role. The administrator expressed optimism about identifying a suitable candidate by the following month. With a current population of around 580 residents, Starbase is strategically located next to SpaceX's South Texas rocket manufacturing and launch site. This latest move is part of a broader effort to enhance municipal services within the community. Alongside establishing its own fire department, Starbase is now managing building permits and conducting fire code inspections independently. Initially, there was a plan to hire local sheriff's deputies for city patrols; however, after that plan fell through, the decision was made to form the Starbase Police Department instead. Despite this change, the city continues to contract with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department for jail services. The formation of the police department is still underway and is expected to take approximately six months. At the recent city commission meeting, members reviewed an application to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, which is essential for launching the new police force. This application highlighted the growing demand for law enforcement services, citing 420 calls to police, 180 fire service calls, and 140 EMS requests in 2025. Additionally, there were 353 reported accidents in the area last year, with over 7,000 vehicles utilizing Highway 4 daily. The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office has indicated it cannot guarantee consistent law enforcement coverage for Starbase. The city administration noted that the town’s remote location necessitates prompt and dependable response times, which has raised concerns among residents and city officials. Moreover, the application emphasized that Starbase’s unique characteristics—such as its blend of advanced technology and coastal charm, along with rising property values—have heightened community expectations for essential services, especially in public safety. As SpaceX anticipates a significant increase in launch activities in the coming years, the influx of tourists to the area further underscores the importance of ensuring reliable municipal services. The city underscored its vested interest in maintaining the integrity of spaceflight operations within its jurisdiction.
