In a pivotal moment for India's tech landscape, Sridhar Vembu, founder of Zoho, has launched a cutting-edge Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution, emphasizing the importance of 'tech sovereignty' for the nation. Speaking from the rural town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, Vembu articulated a bold vision aimed at reducing dependence on foreign software giants. The introduction of this 'made-in-India' ERP system is more than just a product launch; it's a strategic initiative intended to empower Indian businesses with homegrown technology. Vembu contended that true autonomy in today’s technology-driven world necessitates complete control over essential technological infrastructures. He views the indigenization of ERP software as crucial for the operational success of businesses nationwide. Despite Zoho's increasing recognition as a model for scalable software solutions, Vembu confirmed in a recent PTI interview that the company will remain privately held. This decision stems from a desire to sidestep the pressures of public market volatility and short-term performance metrics. By staying private, Zoho can reinvest its profits into extensive research and development. This long-term strategy is reflected in the new ERP solution, which took five years to develop, drawing on Zoho's 15 years of expertise in financial software. Vembu, who dedicates about 70% of his time to research activities, believes that India requires more companies that can commit to lengthy innovation cycles. Initially, the new ERP system will focus on the Indian market, aligning with the government’s initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. However, Vembu has plans for gradual global expansion. This launch marks the beginning of a crucial journey for Vembu and Zoho, aiming to ensure that the technological foundation supporting Indian businesses is both local and sustainable.
