Spotify pops 10% on strong user growth, earnings beat

Spotify's shares surged by 10% following the announcement of robust user growth and stronger-than-expected earnings. The renowned music streaming service reported a 7% increase in revenue for the fourth quarter year-over-year, showcasing its resilience in a competitive market. The Swedish company revealed that its monthly active users climbed by 11% compared to the previous year, reaching an impressive 751 million, which exceeded analyst predictions of 744.7 million according to FactSet. Additionally, the number of paid subscribers rose by 10% year-over-year, totaling 290 million. Spotify credits this surge in user numbers to its expansion efforts in Latin America, Europe, and other regions, as well as enhancements to its free mobile tier. Moreover, Spotify's ad-supported user base also outperformed expectations, hitting 476 million against a projected 468.9 million from StreetAccount. The company has been proactive in diversifying its offerings, recently launching audiobooks in new markets and introducing music videos for premium subscribers. It also implemented new artificial intelligence features during the fourth quarter. In a strategic move, Spotify raised prices for its Premium subscription in the U.S., Estonia, and Latvia earlier this month. The service's annual year-end feature, "Spotify Wrapped," demonstrated extraordinary engagement, with over 300 million users participating and generating more than 630 million shares across social media platforms. Financially, Spotify reported a net income of 1.17 billion euros, translating to 4.43 euros per share, a significant increase from 367 million euros, or 1.76 euros per share, in the same period last year. Looking forward, the company anticipates its monthly active users will increase by 8 million, reaching 759 million, surpassing FactSet's estimate of 752.4 million. Furthermore, total premium subscribers are projected to rise to 293 million. For the upcoming quarter, Spotify estimates revenues will reach approximately 4.5 billion euros, although this figure is slightly below the anticipated 4.58 billion euros due to a 670 basis point negative impact from foreign exchange fluctuations.
