Spotify introduces a Premium Platinum plan with lossless access in five markets

Spotify is redefining its premium subscription structure by launching three new tiers: Premium Lite, Premium Standard, and Premium Platinum, now available in five countries: India, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa. Previously, users in these regions could choose from Premium Standard, Duo, or Family plans tailored for varying user needs, offering features like ad-free listening and offline playback. The newly introduced plans will provide these features in various configurations. For example, the Premium Lite plan, priced at ₹139 per month (approximately $1.57), includes ad-free listening with audio quality at 160kbps. The Premium Standard plan, available at ₹199 per month ($2.25), offers offline support alongside higher audio quality at 320kbps. The standout option, Premium Platinum, is priced at ₹299 ($3.37) per month and grants subscribers access to the newly launched Lossless tier. This plan also accommodates two additional users for shared access. Furthermore, Platinum subscribers will benefit from Spotify’s AI DJ feature, which offers commentary during song playback and allows for personalized requests, as well as access to AI-driven playlist creation tools. In September, Spotify announced collaborations with AI software like rekordbox, Serato, and djay, enabling users to import their libraries for customized sets and mixes. The Platinum plan will provide access to these integrations as well. While these features have been available in markets such as North America and Europe for some time, this rollout marks a significant milestone for subscribers in the newly targeted regions. Rumors about a “super premium” plan with lossless streaming capabilities have circulated for years, and while this new tier is currently limited to select markets, there is potential for a global expansion in the future. Currently, Premium users in over 50 countries enjoy tracks at a high-quality 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format. Existing subscribers will see their current plans transition smoothly to the new structure, though new users will need to select one of the new options and will not have the ability to subscribe to the older Duo or Family plans. New pricing reflects a shift in the value proposition, with the Standard individual plan now matching the price of the new Lite plan at ₹139 ($1.57) per month. The Family plan is set at ₹229 ($2.58) for up to six members, while account sharing is exclusive to the Premium Platinum plan. Notably, users who do not prioritize lossless streaming or AI features may find their options limited. Spotify has also adjusted its pricing in other regions, raising U.S. subscription costs from $9.99 to $11.99 over the past two years.
