Spotify introduces verified artist badges to help distinguish humans from AI

In response to the increasing presence of AI-generated music on streaming platforms, Spotify is introducing a new feature called the "Verified by Spotify" badge. This initiative aims to help listeners easily identify genuine human artists amidst a growing sea of AI-produced tracks. To qualify for this prestigious badge, artists must satisfy specific criteria. Spotify evaluates an artist's presence on and off the platform, which includes concert schedules, merchandise sales, and active social media links on their profiles. Profiles primarily associated with AI-generated content or personas will not be eligible for verification. Moreover, artists must demonstrate consistent listener engagement over time. Spotify is particularly interested in artist profiles that are actively sought after, rather than those that experience temporary spikes in popularity. At the time of the launch, Spotify reports that over 99% of frequently searched artists will receive the verification badge, highlighting a diverse mix of independent talents across various genres and regions. Users can expect to see these new badges appearing on artist profiles and next to names in search results within the coming weeks. The badges will feature the text “Verified by Spotify” alongside a distinct green checkmark. Given the vast number of profiles on the platform, the verification process will be ongoing, and the absence of a badge does not preclude a profile from receiving one in the future. Spotify is focusing on artists who have shown strong fan interest and significant contributions to music culture, rather than those producing so-called “functional music,” which is designed for passive listening. In a blog post, Spotify emphasized that this verification program was crafted with both listeners and artists in mind, aiming to foster trust and a deeper understanding of the human artistry behind the music available on their platform. In addition to the badge, Spotify is launching a new profile section in beta that will showcase career highlights, recent releases, and touring activities. This feature will allow users to quickly assess an artist's genuine activity, even if they haven't yet achieved the criteria for the verification badge. These updates reflect Spotify's ongoing efforts to combat the rise of low-quality AI-generated content and impersonators. Recently, the platform began beta testing an “Artist Profile Protection” feature, granting artists the ability to review and approve releases before they appear on their profiles. This move follows reports of Sony Music requesting the removal of over 135,000 AI-generated songs that were masquerading as its artists on various streaming services. While Spotify has not provided specific figures regarding the influx of AI tracks, it is noted that rival service Deezer recently revealed that such tracks now account for 44% of all new uploads on its platform daily.
