On Thursday, Spotify introduced significant updates to its AI policy aimed at improving transparency regarding the use of artificial intelligence in music creation. The updates include measures to better inform listeners when AI is utilized in music production, as well as efforts to reduce spam and clarify the prohibition of unauthorized voice clones on the platform. Spotify plans to adopt the forthcoming industry standard known as DDEX, which will provide a framework for labeling AI-generated music in credits. This initiative will require labels, distributors, and music partners to submit standardized disclosures that detail how AI was involved in the music, such as its role in generating vocals or instrumentation. Sam Duboff, Spotify’s Global Head of Marketing and Policy, emphasized that this approach allows for more nuanced descriptions of AI involvement without forcing tracks into a simplistic categorization. Additionally, the company is set to launch a new music spam filter this fall, aimed at identifying and mitigating spam tactics that have become more prevalent with the rise of AI tools. Duboff pointed out that the ease of content creation through AI has led to an increase in duplicate tracks and manipulation of search algorithms, necessitating new strategies to combat these challenges. In conjunction with the spam filter, Spotify will also address issues related to “profile mismatches,” where fraudulent uploads occur under another artist’s profile. The platform aims to prevent these incidents before music is made available to the public. Despite these stringent measures, Spotify's executives have reaffirmed their support for responsible AI use among artists. Charlie Hellman, Spotify VP and Global Head of Music, noted that the company is not looking to penalize artists who use AI tools authentically. Instead, their focus is on safeguarding the platform against those who exploit the system, ensuring that the creative potential of AI can thrive in a secure environment. The updates come amid a surge in AI-generated music, highlighted by the viral success of an AI-created band, Velvet Sundown, which prompted discussions about transparency in AI music labeling. Competitor Deezer reported that approximately 18% of daily uploads to its service are fully AI-generated, underscoring the growing presence of AI in the music industry. While Spotify did not disclose its specific metrics, Duboff acknowledged that the trends in streaming services are comparable, with many artists distributing their music across multiple platforms.
