Spotify brings AI-powered Prompted Playlists to the U.S. and Canada

Spotify is enhancing its music curation capabilities with the introduction of Prompted Playlists, a cutting-edge AI tool available exclusively for Premium subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. This feature, which builds upon an earlier AI playlist initiative launched in 2024, empowers users to create personalized playlists by articulating their musical desires in their own words. Previously tested in New Zealand, Prompted Playlists allows for a more nuanced approach to playlist creation. Users can provide detailed, conversational prompts to guide the AI in compiling a selection of songs. For instance, during a demonstration, Spotify showcased a prompt that read: "Find me one artist I haven’t listened to yet, but would probably love, or an artist I’ve only heard one or two songs from, and introduce me to them. Build a playlist of songs that’ll give me an overview of their catalog so it feels like I’m getting to know them. Put the songs you think I’ll like the most in the top five spots.” J.J. Italiano, Spotify's Head of Global Music Curation and Discovery, emphasized the feature's accessibility. He noted that many users may not have the time or expertise to curate the perfect playlist for every mood. "This feature allows anyone to build a playlist without needing to know musical genres or industry jargon. You just need to express your feelings," Italiano explained. The AI technology behind Prompted Playlists analyzes real-time music trends, charts, cultural influences, and the user's entire listening history. By default, the playlists are tailored to reflect the user's preferences. However, users can also choose to receive recommendations that push them beyond their usual listening habits, allowing for exploration of new music. Moreover, users are encouraged to craft prompts that do not rely on musical terminology. For example, they could request playlists inspired by weather conditions or their favorite television shows. This shareable feature could lead to the emergence of new creators who develop unique prompts for others to explore. Despite the advancements of Prompted Playlists, Spotify assures that the previous AI playlist feature will continue to operate alongside the new tool. This may lead to some confusion among users due to the similarities in functionality. Currently, the feature is in beta with usage limits and is only available in English. Spotify has not yet announced when it will expand to a global audience, as it aims to refine the tool based on feedback from its initial user base.
