Spotify’s latest feature lets you add your own transitions to playlists

Spotify has rolled out an exciting new feature that empowers subscribers to elevate their playlists with personalized transitions. Announced on Tuesday, this custom transitions feature allows users to seamlessly add transitions between tracks or select from preset options like fade, rise, or blend. To get started, users can open any playlist and click on the 'Mix' option in the toolbar. This feature not only enables customization of transitions but also lets users tweak settings such as volume, EQ, and effects. With the integration of waveform and beat data, users can pinpoint the optimal moments in each track to begin transitions. Spotify has made it easier for those new to audio mixing by automatically displaying the key and beats per minute of each track. This new functionality aims to cater to both seasoned playlist curators and casual music fans, contributing to the nearly 9 billion playlists already created on the platform. It complements a series of updates Spotify has introduced over the past year, which enhance users' control over their listening experiences, including features for adding, sorting, and editing playlists and customizing the Discover Weekly playlist. In a bid to compete with Apple Music's forthcoming AutoMix feature, which is currently available in the iOS 26 developer beta, Spotify's new offering allows Premium subscribers to save and share their customized playlists on social media. Users can also invite friends to collaborate on mixes, providing a social element to music curation. The mix feature can be easily toggled on and off, enabling users to revert to traditional playlists whenever desired. Spotify suggests that mixing works best with genres like house and techno, which are known for their seamless transitions. Additionally, users can customize their mixes further with unique cover art, stickers, and labels designed specifically for mixed playlists. This feature is available starting today for most eligible Premium users worldwide, though some regions in the APAC area will have to wait a bit longer for access. The rollout is gradual for those who have updated their iOS app.
