On Wednesday, Spotify revealed an exciting new feature that empowers users with greater control over their listening experience. Dubbed 'Prompted Playlists,' this innovative tool is initially being rolled out to Premium subscribers in New Zealand and is currently in beta testing. The feature, available exclusively in English for now, is set to evolve before expanding to additional markets. Prompted Playlists enable users to craft personalized playlists that reflect their unique musical preferences across their entire Spotify listening history. Unlike other playlist options, this new tool takes into account not just the songs users currently enjoy but their full musical journey on the platform from day one. Building on the existing AI playlist functionality introduced last year, the Prompted Playlists allow for more extensive written requests. Users can articulate their desires in greater detail, leveraging the AI's ability to incorporate broader world knowledge. For example, subscribers might request playlists featuring tracks from their favorite artists over the last five years or seek hidden gems they haven't yet discovered. The potential for customization is vast. Users can ask for high-energy tracks suitable for a 30-minute 5K run, gradually transitioning to more relaxing tunes for a cool-down. Additionally, they can request songs from popular films and TV shows that align with their tastes. Users also have the flexibility to refine their prompts further and dictate how frequently their playlists refresh, whether daily or weekly. Spotify aims to offer a personalized experience similar to its flagship Discover Weekly playlist but tailored to specific genres, time periods, or personal preferences. Each playlist will come with descriptions and context to clarify the reasons behind song selections, and the platform will provide starter prompts to assist users in crafting their ideal playlists. Interestingly, Spotify is not alone in this trend of enhancing user control over algorithms. Instagram has recently introduced a feature that allows users to influence the types of reels they encounter, while Bluesky, a competitor to X, also provides users with options to customize their algorithm.
