Spotify changes developer mode API to require premium accounts, limits test users

Spotify is revamping its Developer Mode, introducing significant changes to the way developers can interact with its APIs. The new requirements now mandate that developers hold a premium account while also limiting the number of test users for third-party applications. Initially launched in 2021, Developer Mode allowed developers to test their applications with a maximum of 25 users. However, Spotify has now reduced this figure to just five users per application. Developers wishing to reach a broader audience will need to submit a request for an extended quota, reflecting the company's desire to mitigate risks associated with AI-driven automation in its ecosystem. In a blog post, Spotify explained that the evolution of automation and AI has dramatically shifted how its APIs are accessed and used. As the platform grows, the risks associated with developer access necessitate stricter control measures. The company emphasized that the Developer Mode remains a space for individual learning and experimentation, albeit within more defined parameters. The recent updates also include a deprecation of several API endpoints. Developers will no longer have access to functionalities such as retrieving information about new album releases, top tracks of artists, or the markets where specific tracks are available. Moreover, the ability to manage tracks, albums, or audiobooks through the API is being removed. These adjustments are part of a broader trend of restrictions that Spotify has been implementing over the past few years. Notably, in November 2024, the company limited access to certain API endpoints that could reveal user listening habits, including patterns among different artists. Additionally, in March 2025, new criteria for obtaining extended quotas were established, requiring developers to possess a legally registered business and a minimum of 250,000 monthly active users, along with presence in key Spotify markets. These restrictions have sparked frustration among developers, who argue that Spotify's measures hinder innovation and favor larger entities over independent creators.
