Spotify moves to tackle AI abuse with transparency measures

On Thursday, Spotify introduced new initiatives aimed at promoting transparency among artists and publishers regarding their use of artificial intelligence in music production. The Swedish streaming giant is urging musicians and producers to adhere to a new guideline established by the Digital Data Exchange (DDEX). This consortium comprises prominent media companies, music licensing organizations, and tech firms focused on setting standards for the creative sector. Since the start of the year, DDEX has enabled the labeling of music tracks as being created entirely, partially, or not at all with AI. Once this metadata is incorporated, it will be accessible throughout the Spotify platform, as stated by Sam Duboff, the company's head of music marketing. The issue of AI in music gained notable attention in June when a group named The Velvet Sundown went viral, with their hit song amassing over three million streams on Spotify. The new labeling initiative is voluntary, meaning that content creators are not mandated to disclose the role of AI in their work. Charlie Hellman, Spotify's head of music, noted during a presentation that the public's perception of AI music used to be quite binary—either it was AI-generated or it wasn't. However, he emphasized that the reality is much more complex, with various levels of AI integration in music production. Spotify aims to support artists who use AI in a genuine and responsible manner. The company has reported that over 15 labels and distributors have pledged to follow the DDEX guidelines. While Deezer remains the only major music platform to consistently label tracks fully produced by AI, Spotify has found that the audience for such tracks is relatively small. Duboff remarked that content generated with minimal effort often suffers in quality and fails to attract significant listenership. Additionally, Spotify has clarified its policies to ensure that unauthorized uses of AI, such as creating deepfakes or imitations without consent, are prohibited, and any such content will be promptly removed from the platform.
