Spotify removes 75 million spam tracks, brings policies to target deepfakes, fraudulent uploads

In a decisive move to tackle the challenges posed by generative AI, Spotify has unveiled a comprehensive set of measures designed to combat impersonation and fraudulent content on its platform. The streaming giant noted that the rapid advancements in AI technology present both exciting opportunities and significant risks for the music industry. While many artists are embracing AI tools to enhance their creative processes, others have found their voices cloned without permission or their profiles inundated with unauthorized uploads. Over the past year, Spotify has reportedly removed over 75 million spam tracks in an effort to maintain the integrity of its platform. Among the newly introduced initiatives is a fortified impersonation policy, which prohibits the use of vocal deepfakes and unauthorized artist voice cloning unless explicitly approved by the respective artist. Additionally, Spotify is collaborating with distributors to thwart fraudulent uploads targeting artist profiles, while also pledging to allocate more resources to address content mismatches. This autumn, Spotify is set to launch a new spam filter specifically designed to identify and minimize the visibility of accounts engaging in mass uploads, duplicates, and other spam tactics. This initiative aims to safeguard royalties for legitimate artists while curtailing the exploitation of payout systems by spammers. Moreover, Spotify is stepping up to support an industry-wide standard for AI disclosures in music credits, developed in collaboration with DDEX. This new framework will empower artists and rights holders to specify how AI has been utilized in the creation of a track, whether in vocals, instrumentation, or post-production. Once labels and distributors begin submitting this information, the disclosures will be prominently displayed on the platform. Spotify emphasizes that these changes are designed to enhance transparency and uphold listener trust, rather than penalizing artists who responsibly incorporate AI into their work. The company is actively partnering with organizations like DistroKid, CD Baby, Believe, EMPIRE, and FUGA to promote broad adoption of these standards. While acknowledging the transformative impact of AI on music creation, Spotify remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting artist identities, ensuring fair royalties, and fostering transparency for its audience.
