Spotify hits a record 751M monthly users thanks to Wrapped, new free features

Spotify, the renowned Swedish music streaming service, has achieved a remarkable milestone with 751 million monthly active users, marking an impressive 11% increase from the previous year. This surge in user numbers is largely attributed to its popular year-end 'Wrapped' campaign, which showcases personalized listening statistics and highlights for users, alongside fresh enhancements to its free tier. In the fourth quarter, the platform welcomed an astounding 38 million new users, while its paying subscribers grew by 10%, reaching 290 million. The 'Wrapped' initiative alone engaged over 300 million users, resulting in an impressive 630 million social media shares across 56 languages. Financially, Spotify reported a revenue of €4.53 billion (approximately $5.39 billion), reflecting a 7% increase year-over-year, primarily driven by an 8% rise in subscription revenue. However, the ad-supported segment faced challenges, with a 4% decline in revenue to €518 million ($616.6 million). Notably, the company’s gross margin improved by 83 basis points, reaching a record high of 33.1%, fueled by increased ad sales for podcasts and music. This noteworthy performance comes as Spotify transitions leadership from co-founder Daniel Ek to new co-CEOs Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, who now guide a business that has significantly evolved beyond its original music streaming focus. Spotify has broadened its offerings to include podcasts, audiobooks, and even physical bookstores, alongside introducing features like music videos and video podcasts. To enhance user engagement, Spotify has implemented various social features, enabling group chats and song-sharing capabilities. Additionally, users can now book concert tickets and explore the stories behind their favorite tracks. The introduction of AI functionalities, such as an AI DJ and AI-generated playlists, has further enriched the user experience, allowing for personalized recommendations. In a bid to ensure profitability, Spotify has raised subscription prices in both the U.S. and Europe while enhancing its free tier to compete more effectively against rivals like YouTube Music and Amazon Music. The company anticipates reaching 759 million users and 293 million paying subscribers in the upcoming quarter.
