Spotify denies recent accusation that it changed its terms for artists

This week, Spotify took a stand against the spread of misinformation regarding its terms of service. The move came in response to allegations from creators, including artist @chantmagick, who claimed that the platform had altered its agreements to allow the transfer of music rights to third parties like partners and tech providers. In a public statement, Spotify firmly denied these accusations, emphasizing that the new terms do not alter the distribution rights of artists, podcasters, and creators concerning their music, shows, and audiobooks. Instead, the updated terms primarily concern listeners, enabling Spotify to introduce features such as user-generated podcast comments, custom playlist covers, and personalized playlist titles. Despite ongoing criticism of its treatment of artists, Spotify reassured its user base that the changes are not detrimental to creators' rights. The platform continues to face scrutiny for its compensation practices, with many artists arguing they are not fairly compensated for their work. Notably, last year, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Congressman Jamaal Bowman introduced the Living Wage for Musicians Act, which seeks to increase streaming royalties to one cent per stream. In defense of its current practices, Spotify stated that it has paid out $10 billion to the music industry in 2024, claiming improvements in its payment structure. The conversation about fair compensation for artists remains a hot topic in the music streaming landscape, as platforms navigate user-generated content and creator rights.
