In a significant move, Spotify has unveiled a new feature allowing parent-managed accounts for children on its free tier. This update, announced on Wednesday, is now available to families in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Previously, the 'Managed Account' feature was exclusive to paid subscribers, but now parents can create separate accounts for their kids. This ensures that children's music preferences do not influence their parents' listening experience or affect the annual Spotify Wrapped summary. Kids using these accounts can curate their own playlists, save favorites, and receive personalized music recommendations. The rollout of Managed Accounts aligns with a growing trend among tech companies to enhance parental controls in response to regulatory demands. With this feature, parents gain the ability to restrict access to certain songs or artists, and explicit content is automatically filtered out. Additionally, video playback is disabled by default, and interactive features are limited, preventing children from accessing age-restricted functionalities like messaging. Setting up a Managed Account is straightforward for those on a Family Plan. Parents simply navigate to their account settings in the app, select 'Add a Member,' and follow prompts to create an account for a child under 13. They can also customize display names and content preferences, with the flexibility to make adjustments at any time. Spotify has indicated that it will expand the availability of Managed Accounts to more countries in the near future, enhancing the platform's appeal to families seeking safer listening environments for their children.
