At the recent SXSW conference, Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström unveiled an exciting new feature designed to give listeners greater control over their music recommendations. This beta feature allows users to review and modify their Taste Profile, an algorithmic representation of their music preferences that fuels personalized playlists like Discover Weekly and Spotify Wrapped. Initially available to Premium users in New Zealand, this feature will enable listeners to access all of their listening data—encompassing music, podcasts, and audiobooks—within the app. By editing their Taste Profile, users can fine-tune future recommendations, specifying their desired vibes in natural language prompts. The app's home page will then adjust to reflect these new preferences. Previously, Spotify offered limited options for adjusting one’s Taste Profile, allowing users to exclude only specific tracks or playlists. This often led to frustrations, as many users felt that the app's suggestions did not accurately mirror their musical tastes. The issue was exacerbated when users shared their accounts with family or friends, resulting in a cluttered profile filled with music that didn't truly represent their preferences. With this new feature, Spotify aims to address long-standing user complaints regarding the relevance of recommendations, particularly during the annual Wrapped summary, which often suffered due to shared account usage. The rollout of the Taste Profile feature is set to begin in the coming weeks in New Zealand, with plans for expansion to additional markets soon after.
