Spotify hints at a more chatty voice AI interface in the future

Spotify is on the brink of revolutionizing how users interact with its platform, hinting at advancements in voice AI technology that could lead to a more conversational experience. This follows the company's recent introduction of an AI DJ, which not only plays music tailored to individual tastes but also allows users to make specific requests. During a recent earnings call, Spotify's Chief Product and Technology Officer, Gustav Söderström, discussed how AI is reshaping the company’s approach to user interaction. He pointed out that listeners can now communicate with Spotify in everyday language to request their favorite tracks. This capability enables Spotify to better understand which phrases correlate with specific songs, essentially creating a new dataset for the platform. Söderström elaborated that Spotify's extensive collection of playlists offers unique insights, akin to Amazon's recommendation system. The voice interface is delivering valuable data that the company is rapidly compiling, allowing for a much more engaging user experience in the future. As the technology evolves, users can expect a far more interactive relationship with the service. "You can already write to Spotify, talk to Spotify. You’re just going to see that expand," Söderström noted, indicating that AI advancements would enhance not only music predictions but also the service's ability to understand user preferences better. Specifically, the future of Spotify's AI could include reasoning capabilities that analyze users' listening habits alongside their interactions with the AI DJ. This focus on advanced reasoning suggests that Spotify is exploring deeper AI models capable of handling more complex tasks. The voice data utilized for these developments stems from the AI DJ feature introduced in May 2025, which allows Premium subscribers to use voice commands to manage their music preferences. However, Spotify is not just stopping at consumer-facing features. Söderström also mentioned that the company is harnessing generative AI internally to expedite product development and improve operational efficiencies, including in finance. Despite achieving a milestone of 276 million paying subscribers—an increase of 12% year-over-year—and reaching 696 million monthly active users, Spotify faced challenges in the latest quarter, reporting a loss after falling short of revenue targets. The company's stock took a hit, declining by 10% following disappointing guidance and CEO Daniel Ek's dissatisfaction with the advertising segment of the business.
