Spotify expands parent-managed accounts for kids to more countries, including the US

Spotify has unveiled a significant expansion of its Managed Accounts feature, allowing parents to oversee their children's music listening habits more effectively. This rollout, announced on Tuesday, introduces the feature to users in several new countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, following a successful pilot program last year. Managed Accounts are designed for families subscribed to Spotify's Premium Family plan, enabling parents to create a tailored music experience for children under the age of 13. This functionality ensures that children's music preferences do not interfere with the main account's algorithm or features like the annual Spotify Wrapped. With Managed Accounts, kids can curate their own playlists, save favorite songs, and receive personalized music recommendations. However, parents are given the tools to limit access to certain features, including explicit content, videos, and other interactive elements. For instance, they can prevent children from playing specific songs or listening to particular artists, ensuring a safer listening environment. Additionally, the interactivity features are restricted, meaning children will not have access to age-restricted functionalities such as messaging. This approach allows parents to exercise precise control over the music their children can listen to without reverting to the more restrictive Spotify Kids app. To set up Managed Accounts, Family Plan holders can easily navigate to their account settings within the app, select “Add a Member,” and follow the prompts to create a listener profile for their child. Previously, this feature has been available in countries such as New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. This broader implementation aligns with ongoing efforts by major tech companies to enhance parental controls in response to increasing regulatory scrutiny regarding children's safety online.
