Spotify launches music videos in the U.S. and Canada for Premium subscribers

Spotify is set to roll out its music video feature in the United States and Canada, following a successful beta launch in select international markets last year. This exciting addition will be exclusively available to users subscribed to Spotify's Premium plan, allowing them to enjoy a new visual experience alongside their favorite tracks. As users stream a song, they will now encounter an option to "Switch to video," which initiates playback of the corresponding music video. This update marks a departure from the previous beta version, as it allows the video to start from the exact point in the song where the listener is. Users can easily revert back to an audio-only mode by selecting the "Switch to audio" option whenever they choose. The videos can also be viewed in full-screen mode when the device is held horizontally, enhancing the viewing experience. To further enrich the offerings, Spotify plans to introduce video-specific playlists for its U.S. and Canadian subscribers by the end of the month. These playlists will feature popular themes such as 90s Video Hits, Hip-Hop Throwbacks, Latin Party Hits, Country Hits, and Pop Music Video Hits. Additionally, personalized video recommendations will appear on users' home screens, making the discovery of new content more engaging. This move to incorporate music videos is a strategic effort by Spotify to bolster its competitive edge against YouTube, which has established itself as a key player in music streaming and is expanding into podcasts. To counter this competition, Spotify has also integrated video podcasts and various social features like comments, Q&As, and polls to create a more interactive platform. The announcement of the music video feature’s launch in North America came after Spotify’s recent agreement with the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) in November. This partnership allows NMPA members to enter direct licensing agreements for audio-visual rights in the U.S., a step Spotify believes will bolster revenue for songwriters and independent publishers. The company has also secured similar agreements with major labels such as Universal, Sony, and Warner Music Group as part of its initiative to support the music community. While Spotify has not disclosed the total number of music videos available at launch or the specific labels involved, a spokesperson confirmed that streams of music videos will generate royalties, similar to audio streams, provided they last at least 30 seconds. In addition to the U.S. and Canada, this music video feature will also be extended to several other countries, including Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Uganda, and Venezuela, with a complete list of beta markets available on Spotify’s support site. Notably, in beta markets like Brazil and Colombia, music videos will be accessible to users on the free tier as well.
