Spotify launches the ability to purchase physical books in the US and UK

Spotify has taken an intriguing step into the realm of physical book sales, officially launching a new feature this week in both the U.S. and the U.K. This innovative offering allows users to purchase physical books directly through the Spotify app, thanks to a partnership with Bookshop.org, a platform dedicated to promoting local, independent bookstores. When users navigate to audiobook pages in the app, they will find a new button labeled "Get a copy for your bookshelf." By clicking this option, they are redirected to Bookshop's website, which handles all aspects of pricing, inventory, and shipping. For now, the ability to buy physical books is available solely on Android devices, but iOS users can expect to gain access within the next week. This initiative not only reinforces Spotify's ambition to be a comprehensive destination for book enthusiasts but also aligns with the company's broader strategy aimed at enhancing profitability. As part of this strategy, Spotify has been raising subscription prices across the U.S. and Europe, recently announcing that it has achieved 751 million monthly active listeners. In addition to this new book feature, Spotify has rolled out several other updates that were first revealed back in February. One notable enhancement is the expansion of the "Page Match" feature, which now supports over 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. This tool allows users to scan pages from physical or e-books with their smartphone camera, analyzing the content and linking them to the corresponding section in the audiobook. Since its launch for English books, Spotify has noted that users utilizing the Page Match feature stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours weekly than those who do not. Impressively, 62% of the titles matched through this feature are books that users had never listened to before. Furthermore, the official rollout of "Audiobook Recaps" on Android devices has been introduced, offering brief audio summaries tailored to where the user last paused in the story, making it easier to resume listening. Additionally, Spotify has launched "Audiobook Charts" in Germany, following its previous introduction in the U.S. and U.K., showcasing popular and trending titles to help users discover their next favorite read.
