Spotify ventures into physical book sales, adds new audiobook features

In an exciting shift for book enthusiasts, Spotify has announced its foray into physical book sales alongside new features aimed at enhancing the audiobook experience. This development comes as Spotify users grapple with a recent price increase, yet it promises to provide a silver lining for those who cherish both audiobooks and printed materials. Starting this spring, users in the U.S. and the UK will have the option to purchase physical copies of their favorite audiobooks directly through the Spotify app. This significant move marks a departure from Spotify's traditional focus on digital content, positioning the platform as a competitor to established booksellers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. To further enrich the audiobook experience, Spotify is rolling out two notable features. The first, called "Page Match," allows users to scan a page from a physical book to seamlessly transition to that exact point in the audiobook. This tool is designed to make switching between reading and listening effortless. Additionally, the "Audiobook Recaps" feature, previously exclusive to iOS, is now set to launch on Android devices this spring. This feature provides concise recaps tailored to the last section the user listened to, further enhancing engagement. Spotify's collaboration with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace supporting local independent bookstores, underscores the company's commitment to promoting community-focused initiatives. Each purchase made through Spotify will directly benefit local bookstores, making it a boon for independent booksellers. The integration of physical book sales into the app will be accessible via an "Add to your bookshelf at home" button on audiobook pages, directing users to Bookshop's website for pricing and shipping details. The Page Match feature is currently available to premium subscribers, with a broader rollout expected by late February. Since the introduction of audiobooks two years ago, Spotify has witnessed remarkable growth in this sector, reporting a 36% increase in users listening to audiobooks and a 37% rise in listening hours over the past year. Notably, over half of Spotify's 281 million premium subscribers have engaged with audiobooks, highlighting the platform’s expanding influence in the literary world. Spotify is set to unveil its fourth-quarter earnings on February 10, and this strategic pivot may play a significant role in its future trajectory.
