Spotify upgrades its lyrics feature with offline access, more translations

On Wednesday, Spotify unveiled significant upgrades to its in-app lyrics feature, allowing users to access lyrics even without an internet connection. This enhancement also includes global availability for lyrics translations, broadening the feature's reach beyond the 25 markets previously supported. The move comes as part of Spotify's strategy to encourage free users to subscribe to its Premium service. Following a controversial attempt to restrict lyrics access to paying users in early 2024, the company has now repositioned the lyrics display within the app. Lyrics will now be prominently shown directly beneath the album artwork or accompanying video, a change inspired by user feedback indicating that such placement boosts interaction with the feature. Premium subscribers are the only ones who will benefit from the offline lyrics access, which Spotify hopes will serve as an incentive for users to upgrade their plans. The updated lyrics feature, which Spotify refers to as lyric previews, is set to be available globally on both iOS and Android platforms for all users. Additionally, the lyrics translation feature, first rolled out in 2022, can now be accessed by users worldwide. By tapping the translation icon on the lyrics card, users can view the translated text beneath the original lyrics, automatically adjusting to the language settings of their device. This expansion follows years of consumer demand and a gradual rollout of real-time lyrics that began in 2021, overcoming previous licensing hurdles. Spotify had initially partnered with Genius to provide a unique 'behind the lyrics' feature that offered trivia along with song lyrics, but has since moved to enhance its own offerings.
