Spotify, after maintaining steady subscription rates for over a decade, is set to raise its prices once again. In an email sent to subscribers today, the streaming giant revealed that the cost of its Premium monthly subscription will rise from $12 to $13, effective on users' billing dates in February. This adjustment marks the third price increase implemented by Spotify in just 2.5 years. Alongside the Premium plan, other subscription tiers are also seeing increases. Student subscriptions will jump from $6 to $7, Duo plans for two users in one household will rise from $17 to $19, and Family plans accommodating up to six users will now cost $20 instead of $18. Notably, the Basic plan, available only as a downgrade option for some Premium subscribers, will remain unchanged at $11 per month. Historically, Spotify subscribers have benefitted from stable pricing, but today's announcement signifies a shift, following major price hikes in July 2023. In that instance, individual Premium subscriptions increased from $11 to $12, Duo plans from $15 to $17, and Family subscriptions saw a bump from $17 to $20. The company attributed these changes to its need to invest in and enhance product features. Spotify's rationale for the latest round of price hikes is somewhat vague but suggests that adjustments reflect the value users gain from the service. Recently, Spotify has introduced several new features, including lossless audio, music videos, and social listening capabilities, which allow friends to share their listening experiences and enjoy joint sessions called Jams. Additionally, Spotify has expanded its footprint by launching an 11,000-square-foot podcast studio in Hollywood this month.
