The commander of the military unit overseeing Cape Canaveral's spaceport has announced that SpaceX is expected to commence Starship rocket launches from the site next year. This development has not been well-received by competing launch companies situated near SpaceX’s planned launch pads. Both Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance (ULA), SpaceX’s two main competitors, have voiced concerns regarding SpaceX's ambition to execute up to 120 Starship launches annually from Florida’s Space Coast. They argue that this volume of launches could necessitate regular evacuations of personnel from their own launch sites for safety precautions. This isn't the first instance where Blue Origin and ULA have attempted to hinder SpaceX's operations; they previously fought against NASA's decision to lease a dormant launch pad to SpaceX back in 2013, though they ultimately did not succeed. Col. Brian Chatman, the commander of Space Launch Delta 45, confirmed to the press recently that the initiation of Starship launches would indeed impact access to neighboring launch pads. Space Launch Delta 45, which was formerly known as the 45th Space Wing, manages the Eastern Range and is tasked with launch safety at both Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and the nearby Kennedy Space Center. Their responsibilities include ensuring that all personnel remain clear of hazardous areas during both testing and launch activities, as well as maintaining public safety outside the spaceport. Chatman emphasized the significance of the current moment for the Space Coast, stating, “There is no better time to be here on the Space Coast than where we are at today. We are breaking records on the launch manifest. We are getting capability on orbit that is essential to national security, and we’re doing that at a time of strategic challenge.” SpaceX is also progressing with the construction of a Starship launch facility on NASA grounds at Kennedy Space Center, specifically at Launch Complex-39A, which is already home to their Falcon 9 rocket operations. Additionally, the company plans to establish another Starship launch site on Space Force property located a few miles south. “We anticipate Starship being ready to launch here in early to mid-next year,” Chatman noted, adding, “We’ll have the range ready to support at that time.”
