The Indian government got cold feet on Starlink just before SpaceX’s IPO

SpaceX's ambition to expand its satellite internet service, Starlink, into India may be in jeopardy due to the Indian government's apprehensions regarding compliance with local laws. After years of persistent lobbying, SpaceX secured a license to operate in India, with plans to launch services by 2025. However, recent reports indicate that Indian officials have put the rollout on hold following Starlink's unauthorized access in Iran, raising questions about the company's adherence to regulations. Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink operations, defended the company, asserting that discussions with the Government of India are ongoing and productive, countering claims made by unnamed sources. It’s important to note that no reports have confirmed that these discussions have ceased. Any delays in launching Starlink in India could pose significant challenges for SpaceX, particularly as it approaches its initial public offering (IPO). Financial disclosures reveal that Starlink's customer acquisition is tapering off, and its overall value is closely tied to its ability to operate in multiple countries. The infrastructure costs are fixed, while revenue relies heavily on subscriber numbers. Market entry is a complex process, often requiring negotiations with governments that strive to protect their domestic telecommunications sectors. India has stipulated requirements concerning local data storage and network security, which SpaceX has been working diligently to fulfill. However, concerns linger among Indian officials about their capacity to control Starlink, especially in light of the recent incident in Iran. The issue of network control is not new for SpaceX. In 2022, Ukrainian forces, who relied on Starlink during the conflict with Russia, faced service interruptions when Elon Musk expressed concerns about their military use of the technology. Meanwhile, Starlink's attempts to negotiate service in Taiwan have stalled owing to Musk's controversial assertions regarding the island's sovereignty and his reluctance to engage with local partners.
