Starlink’s ambitious mobile plan could be trouble for Apple, AT&T, and Verizon

SpaceX is making waves in the telecommunications sector with its $17 billion acquisition of spectrum licenses from EchoStar, a move that could enhance Starlink's ability to provide mobile services directly to smartphones. This strategic purchase may prompt major players like AT&T and Verizon to reconsider their partnerships with satellite competitor AST SpaceMobile. The acquisition includes rights to 50 MHz of spectrum in the 1.9 and lower 2 GHz bands, which will empower SpaceX to launch up to 15,000 new satellites designed for cellular communication. This initiative promises to extend mobile connectivity to regions where traditional networks fall short, offering phone, text, and broadband services from space. Furthermore, Apple, which has faced internal challenges regarding its collaboration with Globalstar, might find itself reassessing its decisions in light of SpaceX's advancements. There have been whispers of discontent within Apple about its current agreements, and the allure of a partnership with Elon Musk's venture may grow stronger as the situation evolves. Pending regulatory approval, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to greenlight SpaceX’s plans, especially given the pressures surrounding EchoStar's spectrum usage. The FCC, under Chairman Brendan Carr, has previously urged for the availability of these frequencies, asserting that EchoStar had not sufficiently utilized its spectrum. This could pave the way for SpaceX to not only advance its satellite network but also reshape the competitive landscape of mobile communications.
