In a groundbreaking development, SpaceX has announced its acquisition of AI startup Cursor for an impressive $60 billion. This announcement comes on the heels of SpaceX's recent debut on the Nasdaq, marking the largest initial public offering in history. Cursor, known for its innovative AI coding tool, has rapidly gained popularity among software developers, enabling them to generate, edit, and review code with ease. Since its establishment in 2022, the company has seen remarkable growth, reporting over $1 billion in annualized revenue just last November. Elon Musk has previously integrated SpaceX with his AI venture, xAI, and this latest acquisition is set to enhance SpaceX's competitive edge against formidable rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which provide sought-after coding solutions. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, SpaceX anticipates finalizing the merger by the third quarter of this year. Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, expressed her enthusiasm about the partnership in a recent interview with CNBC, stating that the collaboration with Cursor is a strategic move that “makes a huge amount of sense.” Following the announcement, shares of SpaceX rose approximately 5% in premarket trading. In April, SpaceX secured the rights to acquire Cursor, and as a contingency plan, they agreed to pay $10 billion should the deal not materialize. Cursor's CEO, Michael Truell, took to X to share his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the potential to scale their AI model, Composer, and create an unparalleled environment for coding with AI.
